Lautoka, Fiji — 31 May 2018

Today it has been announced that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Balawa, Lautoka will be hosting a Community Fair on Saturday June 23rd, commencing at 10am. Under the umbrella of the Self Reliance Services department of the Church, the Fair will bring businesses and organizations from both the private and public sectors together with members of the general public. Organizations can share their information, services, goals, and courses with those who attend and community members can be shown many of the resources locally available to them.

“Our goal is to bring this information to the members of our community, and to provide them access to opportunities that they may have overlooked or not recognized before.” said Solomone Kaumaitotoya, President of the Lautoka Stake of the Church.

Amongst the organizations participating are local universities and technical colleges, the agricultural sector, small business development groups, financial

institutions, health and medical organizations and essential service groups such as the Fiji Police, Fire Services, Military and the Red Cross. There will be information on the Lautoka City Council’s Recycling initiative, genealogists showing how to trace your family history, and even a presentation on self defense techniques.

“We are taught in the Church that self-reliance is the ability, commitment, and effort to provide the spiritual and temporal necessities of life for self and family. There are great needs within our community and this Community Fair is to inform and encourage community members so that they have access to opportunities and resources they may not have recognized before.” President Kaumaitotoya continued. “We believe that as people learn how to set their own course and find answers to their own problems the more self-reliant they become, and the more freedom they will enjoy.”

As well as the information booths, there will be face painting for the children, the sale of hot food and ice creams, cultural activities such as traditional dancing and, following the event, a family movie night will be held for those interested in attending.

Attendance is free and all are invited to come along and enjoy the day’s activities and information exchange. Members of the Church will be attending from as far as Rakiraki and Sigatoka.
