Extensive road work that was carried out within a span of two months has been completed in Navua and now awaits the official declaration as a town.

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) had contracted Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) to carry out the Navua Town road work.

Located 39 kilometres west of Suva, Navua is expected to become Fiji’s 14th town once it receives its official status.

FHH Project Construction Manager, Ciaron Kelly, said that “full FHH crews were on site to ensure that surrounding road access to and through the township, including ancillary works, were upgraded.”

“We have completed the pavement and concrete works for Naitonitoni Road, which is 1.8km, that’s 500 metres of foam bitumen and asphalt surfacing beginning from the overhead bridge on the Queens Road through to Naitonitoni Road leading into main part of town,” he said.

“A length of 600 metres coming into town and 700 metres heading out of the end was cement stabilised with a two-coat seal. All the residential driveways have been replaced. In total, 4,300 square metres of foam bitumen has been laid in the main section of Navua Town,” Mr Kelly added.

Damaged culverts have been replaced, footpaths levelled out, and drainage cleared off debris.

With a population of 5,048 as of the 2007 census, Navua was once a sugar producing area in the 1800s and sits on the embankment of the Navua River.

Recently commending FHH for the work carried out in Navua, FRA General Manager Network Operations and Maintenance, Aram Goes, said thanked FHH for their hard effort despite the time frame given.

“FHH worked tremendously hard to complete the project within a very tight time frame. This work will provide a much improved infrastructure asset for the town for years to come,” he said.
